This was a nice experience overall and it seems well-made. I wanted to try a traditional igusa mat for a long time and finally got one. I put it on top of my Japanese futon (which was right on top of my western mattress). The smell was nice and pretty gentle. Hard to describe. Grassy, like a nice hay. It looked well-made and was smooth, easy to fold. The only thing is, I have allergies to all kinds of things like pollen/hay/certain grasses and I think that this igusa mat triggered them so I woke up with some sniffling and minor allergy symptoms. It could have also been a combination of other springtime allergies causing post nasal drip, I don't want to put the blame solely on this mat. In the end, I decided it's best for me to not sleep with it anymore...so if you're very sensitive or have allergies to a lot of things like me, it might not work for you as a mattress. But it was lovely to fall asleep to at night and the smell was comforting, it would work as a floor mat too. I wish I didn't have allergies. But definitely worth a try and glad I got to experience it at least for a bit 🙂
Really nice, well-made, great smell
I purchased the roll up, twin mat. It rolls up nicely with my shikifuton. It doesn't have the smell the review for other ones say it has. It's thin which is what I wanted and I'd say it's a good value.

After searching for an affordable tatami mat and reading a lot of reviews about strong smells, I was worried this one would be like that, especially since it was one of the better priced ones. I am happy to report that the smell is mild- it is, after all, made of grass. But it is minimal, and a reminder of freshness and natural materials. Once I lay my shikibuton on top and have my sheets and blanket, there is no scent at all. This is coming from someone with a (too) sensitive sense of smell. In summary, this was very affordable, well made and low scent. Very happy!

It looks like a real Japanese tatami and smells great of Igusa grass.
It has a non-slip surface on the back, so you can create a Japanese-style room anywhere without slipping.
It is very comfortable to lie around on the tatami.

I ordered these Tatami mats not really expecting much because the price was pretty low. What I noticed immediately is the smell. I used to live in Japan and since moving back to states, I often find myself missing it. These tatami mats reminded me of that, smells fresh & natural. Originally purchased to sit and have tea on, however my dog seemed to love them and took them over. They are small, so recommend getting a couple to piece together. They are roughly 3ft by 3ft and about 1/2 inch thick. The woven material seems to be great quality, very tightly woven so no loose fibers or any sort of splintering. lightweight so that you can move if needed, yet has a nonslip backing that keeps the mat in place. I have hardwood floors and have no problem with any sort of slid/slipping. I also noticed that feel cool. It's been hot here lately but these mats feel great to lay on. Again, brings back the feel and smell of Japan. So all in all, great product, small but that's already in the description. Just buy a few and you're good to go.

I've had a problem with mattresses and comfort. I've had mattresses from soft to firm. Multiple memory foam from nectar to lucid. This is actually very very and surprisingly comfortable. I'm a minimalist. The cotton is woven thick, it feels durable, the cushioning in between is lush, convenient to fold and put away, the color is as depicted (I chose grey), and the cotton is soft and breathable. The value is great for this. It is quality. Now I'm going to return the mattress that I bought from costco.

Exactly what we wanted!
Have been sleeping on these tatami mats along with the FULI futon for a bit over a month now and it's been amazing. The tatami had just the right amount of give and looks really nice too. It was well packed and came with a nice note, care guide and origami crane, I appreciate the personal touch along with the useful info! I love the smell but if it bothers you don't worry it'll become milder over time as the tatami airs out.
